100 Add to Cart Buttons from Top eCommerce Retailers - Add to Cart buttons – they may be small, but no online retail store can do without them. Since these little, colorful clickables connect the product to the shopping cart, they are essential to the checkout process and ultimately, to your brand’s bottom line. It’s important for any ecommerce merchandiser to put some thought into their store’s Add to Cart button design. We’ve collected and analyzed 100 Add to Cart buttons from the top online retailers of 2022, as well as from a few niche online stores to give you some design inspiration. If any button sticks out to you, be sure to click on it to visit its native page. Before we get into the the full breakdown of Add to Cart buttons, some of the major takeaways from searching top eCommerce sites were: All-Caps buttons are going strong amongst online retailers with over half of eCommerce sites (58%) using All-Caps button text The overwhelming majority of sites (70%) use sharp buttons Only 6% of the retailers use a custom Add to Cart button icon like a shopping cart or basket Only 5% of the retailers include the checkout total of the selected item in their Add to Cart button The most popular colors for Add to Cart buttons are black (23%), followed by blue (18%) and ghost buttons (18%) More than a quarter (27%) of sites use a CSS (Custom Styling Sheets) animation upon hovering over the Add to Cart button Here is the Full Breakdown: 100 Add to Cart Buttons How the Add To Cart Button Can Reinforce Your Branding At first the Add to Cart button may seem like a minor detail, but it has the potential to create an emotional connection with your brand. Your choice of shape, color, font and button text all affect that connection. It’s common for brands to use this kind of intentional design to create personability with the shopping experience, which is why we took note of a few things we noticed from some of our favorite brands that you might want to keep in mind. While best practice indicates not to use all-caps, Promptly Journals' modern, easily consumable all-caps lettering echoes the brand's clean, simple and elegant designs of its journals. With a custom CSS animation that appears upon hovering over the button, it’s almost like Promptly is sliding one of its journals over to you as you add it to your eCommerce shopping cart. Double Under Wonder’s button has a 3D animation that appears to push in upon hovering over it, showcasing the playfulness of their jump rope designs. Old Salt Merchant’s deep navy blue button connects to the brand’s nautical theme origins. Mac Daddy Music Store’s simple, highly functional button emphasizes the functional dependability and product design of its various guitar pedals, pickups and accessories. Need Further Guidance on Differentiating Your Brand's Customer Experience? Get in Contact with One of Our Experts Contact Elastic Path Add to Cart Button Design and Usability Button Text Web copywriting emphasizes scannability -- perhaps the golden rule of web copywriting is don’t use 5 words when three will do. "Buy Now" may be a stronger call to action than "Add to Cart", but may subtly suggest the user is finished shopping or is making a commitment to purchase without time to review the order. The beauty of "Add to Cart" is that it is non-committal and assumes the user is still looking around. And if you’re a good ecommerce merchandiser, you’re showing suggested products and a "continue shopping" link from the view cart page. Text Formatting General web usability guidelines recommend sans-serif fonts with high-contrast color selection (high-contrast white on black or dark blue rather than low-contrast blue-on-blue for example). Your add to cart button color should make it easy to consume. Despite all-caps being generally discouraged in web copywriting, we found 58% of "Add to Cart'' buttons using the text style. Mixed case tends to be the easiest to read, although all lower case is also easy. For example, Ikea slaps small text on a disproportionately wide button forcing some users to squint. Stacking Text Stacking text is not a good idea for links or navigation buttons, and the same goes for "Add to Cart" buttons. Users have come to expect some form of rectangular shape, and when quickly scanning a page, it may take longer to distinguish buttons from decoration, and may even become frustrating. No need to reinvent the wheel, stick to the convention. Button Placement If you offer helpful features on your product pages like wishlists, enlarged photos, color switching, alternate product views, email to friend, size chart, view cart or check out buttons, make sure the "Add to Cart" button is obvious, bright and prominent in comparison. Less important functions can be lighter colored buttons or simple text links. Use Movement and Customization Using responsive buttons that move or change color helps engage the shopper as they browse and hover over the Add to Cart button. If you are in a niche market, consider adding definitive icons to represent your brand; such as a dog bone or collar image within your add to cart button, or if you sell baby clothes and accessories using a rattle with animation. These simple touches add connection and an emotional touch to reflect the endearment of new babies and pets. Track, Analyze, Repeat As I mentioned before, always be testing this critical function. Using any number of analytics functions such as Google, you can track and analyze how your Add to Cart button is performing. You’ll be able to drill down to clicks and conversion rates, and make improvements as necessary to increase those numbers. What if You Use A Button From a Template? Even if you don't use a custom designed "Add to Cart" button for your shopping cart, choose a button that compliments your site's theme (compliments does not infer it must be the exact same color). And make sure you pick one design and stick with it. Ecommerce thrives on trust, and random buttons erode customer confidence.

12 Ways to Drive Leads With QR Codes (& Without Coinbase's Super Bowl Budget) - If you watched the 2022 Super Bowl, you might have been one of the millions of people who scanned the QR code featured in the ad from cryptocurrency platform Coinbase. When scanning the code, you were sent to a page that offered you $15 just for downloading and signing up for Coinbase. The 1-minute Coinbase ad slot, which showed the QR code floating around the screen and inching closer to lining up with the corner of the screen perfectly, was so successful that the Coinbase app and website completely crashed. Here's a look at what HubSpot blogger Pamela Bump saw just seconds after the commercial finished. Coinbase honored its $15 signup promise by emailing scanners who were impacted by the crash the next morning. And, ultimately, the company ran into -- what we call -- "a good problem to have" due to what we can assume was millions of signups. But, you don't have to spend millions on a Super Bowl ad to launch a success QR campaign that drives leads.

Headless Microservices vs. 'Retrofitted' Headless - The eCommerce platform market has and continues to evolve as rapidly as customer preferences and expectations. For instance, innovations like curbside pick-up that became popular during Covid-19 are here to stay, and brands need the technology to keep up. While customer expectations continue to rise, many brands find that their traditional eCommerce platform cannot keep up with these drastic shifts in buyer patterns. Making the necessary optimizations to keep up ends up blowing eCommerce budgets. One alternative to these rigid platforms is headless commerce. But, with more traditional platforms now offering 'headless' solutions, many brands ask us -is there a difference between one headless provider and the next? This post will help answer the questions around the different approaches, and crucially, what solution is right for you? What is Headless? Are There Different Types of Headless? In a nutshell, a headless approach is the 'decoupling' of the front-end layer (the customer-facing storefront)and the back-end (where business rules & logic live). This separation empowers brands with the control to customize an experience that best suits your customer across touchpoints. When headless was pioneered by Elastic Path back in 2012, brands could finally leave their out-of-the-box, traditional platforms that only powered cookie-cutter experiences behind. With headless commerce, they had the flexibility to create unique experiences that would showcase their brand differentiation, accommodate for any complexity or unique requirements, and, most importantly, delight customers. Fast forward to now, some traditional eCommerce platforms or tightly coupled monoliths are adding in an API layer to offer the core functionality of their back-end services & claiming to provide a 'headless' solution. While they are technically headless, not all headless solutions are the same. The key difference is where these platforms started and how far they can deviate from their foundations. These 'retrofitted' headless solutions offer a customizable front-end by exposing the core features through an API layer. When compared to headless microservices solutions, they still lack in terms of customizability of the back-end. By contrast, in a headless microservices approach, each microservice in the back end exists as a separate module. What this means for your business is that you can pick and choose the core commerce capabilities that work best for your goals, and easily compose a solution that includes "best of breed" vendors (like search, OMS, ERP, etc.). Also enabling you to quickly swap core commerce microservices or third-party solutions in and out as customer expectations and business requirements evolve. Continue reading to learn more about the differences between these two approaches. Retrofitted Headless: A Brief Breakdown A retrofitted headless solution is perfectly capable of smoothly operating a business model that it was designed for. In most cases, a retrofitted headless solution would fit a solely direct-to-consumer selling model or even a relatively straightforward B2B scenario if what you are looking for is an out-of-the-box approach that meets all your brand's basic needs. A monolithic back-end is excellent when tackling standard processes and issues for businesses with simple requirements or those looking to launch eCommerce for the first time. Where it does begin to crumble is when new features or customizations for the tightly coupled back end are needed. For example, if your brand needs a specific order flow based on the B2B accounts you have, or if you need to add an option for mobile self-checkout, customization of a retrofitted headless solution will be complex. It would require the support of a dedicated SI or an in-house development team, not a luxury all brands can afford in perpetuity. While a new feature isn't impossible to add onto a retrofitted platform, the costs and time to market implications are drastically different compared to a headless microservices approach. Even when a new feature is simple enough to add on, the time to launch will be dramatically slower due to the interconnectedness of the tightly coupled back end (the components locked together in the image) of these retrofitted headless solutions. The rigidity of these platforms requires extensive testing of each linked component to ensure a new addition has not broken any of the functionality of any of the other connected components. Furthermore, the risk of a stop-gap addition like the ones mentioned above or a voice-enabled chatbot not meeting your brand's needs into the future remains high. Without the option to try another offering in a retrofitted headless architecture, your brand could be stuck in a 'what you have is what you get' situation. That is not ideal in a world that continues to move at a break-neck speed, adopts newer technology, and changes in buyer behavior. A New Approach, Built for the Innovative Brands On the other hand, a headless microservices solution will allow your brands to achieve evolving goals when it comes to delivering an unparalleled experience for your customers. Each service in a headless microservices architecture is created to operate independently with a set of inputs. Each independent service does not rely on the operations of other separate microservices. Think of them like an independent service, where it takes inputs on one end, and any processes are completed within this independent service with a defined set of outputs at the other end. Add on another microservice, and the two can seamlessly operate based on the consistent inputs and outputs without needing to know or influence the processes in the predecessor (represented by the stand-alone octagons in the image above). Why should you care? The benefits are threefold: Flexibility: Pick and choose necessary microservices to achieve your brand's goals, no extra bells & whistles, and the freedom to add or remove microservices as your goals and your customers' needs change. Scalability: Since each microservice was built to operate without dependencies, each of them will be able to scale seamlessly with the benefits of the cloud. Speed: With a headless microservices architecture, you can rapidly add microservices to implement new experiences. Or add functionality required in a new geographical market as needed. The extensive development and testing of customizing a retrofitted architecture are no longer an obstacle, allowing your eCommerce team to innovate and, crucially, deliver a stand-out experience for your customers. Where is the Catch? Of course, no solution is perfect. While no solution is perfect, some fit needs better than others. A common challenge for embracing a headless microservice solution is re-platforming from your traditional eCommerce platform. The costs and time commitment can feel prohibitive, but many brands overcome this with a staggered implementation approach. This method of slowly replacing pieces of a monolith with microservices is a tried-and-true path for transformation. Another option to overcome long implementation timelines could be leveraging a Pre-Composed Solution TM. These are business-ready solutions that are pre-composed from Elastic Path commerce capabilities, 3rd party integrations, and customizations so that brands can quickly deploy experiences; with greater flexibility and less risk. Browse our Pre-Composed Solutions™ here. A headless microservices approach comes with potential cost issues as well. When a brand needs several specific third-party microservices implemented to tailor to its model and goals, the costs of each third-party microservice coupled with the implementation costs for each can add up to a significant amount. While the initial purchase price can be high in this scenario -in some cases higher than re-platforming to a retrofitted headless solution- the benefits around Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) are proven in the long run. Once adopted, a headless microservices architecture, therefore, negates the need for further costly customizations and lengthy innovation cycles. For a deeper look at TCO and the benefits of a microservices-based headless solution, view our guide. Ready to explore a headless microservices approach? Give us a shout. [UPDATE] 7 Customer Loyalty Programs That Actually Add Value - Did you know it costs a business about 5-10X more to acquire a new customer than it does to sell to an existing one? Not only that, but on average, current customers spend 67% more than new customers. In light of statistics like these, businesses must think about what they are doing to keep their customers coming back to their business. And if you’re like 65% of marketers, your company has implemented a loyalty program.

eCommerce Loyalty Programs: How to Manage a Loyalty Experience - In today’s market, it’s critical for brands to implement impactful merchandising strategies that drive conversion and customer lifetime value (CLV). A study by Incentive Solutions found that integrating a loyalty program with your commerce platform can increase your average order quantity by a whopping 319%. Another study from KPMG revealed that 75% of consumers will favor a brand if there is a loyalty program. At Elastic Path, we understand how impactful it can be to curate loyalty experiences for your customers. That is why we built functionality within EP Product Experience Manager (PXM) that enables merchandising teams to easily create and manage loyalty experiences, without relying on custom work from their developer counterparts. What is a Loyalty Experience? A loyalty experience is a marketing strategy created by brands to nurture and reward their best customers with perks for being a member. Memberships can either be free or paid and members can receive special discounts, deals, rewards or points that can be redeemed for prizes. The more the member engages with the brand or buys products, the more incentives they can receive. A loyalty program is a great start but what if you could curate the products and prices your loyalty customers see? At Elastic Path we believe that traditional "loyalty programs" are just a starting point for nurturing relationships with your regular customers. We think all brands should be able to curate loyalty-specific experiences that encourage their highest value customers to remain loyal, return regularly, and purchase more. Let’s dig into how you can manage a loyalty experience of your own, using Elastic Path Commerce Cloud. How to Manage a Loyalty Experience with Elastic Path EP Product Experience Manager (PXM) Merchandise Every Unique Product Experience, Without Custom Dev Work Go to EP PXM To best understand the steps required to build a loyalty experience, let’s walk through a sample scenario. STEP ONE: Offering Early Access to Loyalty Customers For this example, we’ll pretend you are a retail brand that wants to offer early access to our best customers for our upcoming products. The idea of “pre-ordering” products that we commonly see in brick-and-mortar businesses, is exactly what we will be doing in this scenario. Once you are in Commerce Manager from Elastic Path, your merchant should head straight to EP PXM and choose “Configurations.” Then you will choose your hierarchy or category of products that you want for pre-order. For example, choose the “Fall Pre-Order” hierarchy. This will allow you to start merchandising the products that you want to list for pre-order. Your nodes are the subcategories, like men and women. You could also add child nodes, which would be the subcategories within the subcategories. To begin the process, click on the node or subcategory. For example, the “Men” category. Then click on the Add SKUs button and add the SKUs or products that you want to make available for pre-order within this category. For pre-order products, there are a few additional steps we need to take with EP PXM to ensure the correct availability and quantity shows on the product detail page. To get started, you are going to use product templates to hold custom data for your different products. For each product in this example, you would choose the correct product templates and then check the pre-order box. You would also type in the “Limit Inventory” number to establish the maximum number of products for preorder and the “Max Quantity per Order” which is the maximum number of products that a customer can purchase within the pre-order catalog. STEP TWO: Adding Pre-Order Products to Existing Catalog In order to add these products to the appropriate loyalty catalog, go to the catalog section within EP PXM. You would choose your pre-configured loyalty catalog or create a new loyalty catalog if you did not have one already. In the hierarchy section of your loyalty catalog add “Fall Pre-Order.” STEP THREE: Adding Specialty Pricing to Loyalty Catalog Not only do we want to give our best customers early access to these products, we also want to incentivize them with promotional pricing. So, in the loyalty catalog you will go to the price book dropdown menu and select “Loyalty Pricing.” In EP PXM, a price book contains a list of product SKUs and the prices you want to change for those products. If your brand serves multi-geos, a price book can contain prices in each of the supported currencies. Once you have selected the loyalty price book, click publish and the catalog will be updated. STEP FOUR: Use Rules To Assign an Audience How do you ensure that only the members of your loyalty program gain access to your loyalty catalog? You create rules. In the catalog section of EP PXM, select the Rules heading. As you edit the rules section add your loyalty catalog. Then, add accounts or the list of people that you want to have access to this loyalty catalog. This can be done in numerous ways, whether via API, an integration with CRM, or uploading a list. STEP FIVE: Shop The Loyalty Experience At this point, we’ve created a product experience specific to your loyalty customers. Let’s check it out! To see your customer’s view of the loyalty experience, log in to your front-end store. If you or your customers do not log in they will get a general catalog experience. You should now be able to see the new top-level navigation for “Fall Pre-Order” as part of your loyalty catalog. Your loyalty shopper can explore the loyalty-only, pre-order products that you added to the loyalty catalog. Based on whatever rules you have for pre-orders, that product will be shipped when appropriate. Driving Your Loyalty Experience Forward With EP PXM, you can easily create loyalty product experiences within minutes. At Elastic Path, we will continue to give merchandisers the control to create product experiences that drive conversion and revenue. If you would like to learn more about our merchandising capabilities, check out our latest blog on how to create dynamic bundles.
