In the past few years there has been a much-needed push within organizations for a more developed action plan around making sure employees mental health and wellness needs are addressed and taken care of – outside of just offering the common health benefits.
We here at Elastic Path took the call to action and established our first Employee Resource Group, that would in part focus mainly on Wellness.
We established a group of individuals from all business segments, to run our Wellness Employee Resource Group with the assistance of a few individuals from HR and our executive sponsor, Tara Collins (VP of People & Culture).
Our Purpose and Vision:
To hold a space for our employees to have safe dialogue on mental health and wellness, access a pool of resources, become a support network for one another, and be part of the greater commitment from Elastic Path around ongoing learning.
Through bi-monthly newsletters, a wellness slack channel where we share daily tips or ideas as well as workshops, we hope to help our fellow EP’ers find better ways to harness their wellbeing and create more avenues for open dialogue around what can at times be seen as uncomfortable or more vulnerable conversations.
Some of the Topics Elastic Path Focuses on:
Learning to answer how are you, with more than "fine"
Mental health - Stopping the stigma around mental health - lets talk about it!
Learning to control your thoughts
Ideas on how to take screen breaks - yes, even during the workday!
Creating an ergonomic workspace
Financial wellness
Sleep wellness
The importance of using your PTO and how to best prepare for your out of office
Post Covid-19 social anxiety
We decided to take the step further, with implementing a Wellness Day off for the entire company to shut down and focus on themselves as well – we shared ideas for activities, and helped those around us get excited for a completely unplugged day off.
On July 23rd, we all turned off our monitors, muted Slack and collectively as a company took the day off. Yes, even our CEO, Jamus Driscoll. In many cases people took the day, to fully realize that perhaps they had been neglecting to take care of themselves and set up motion to be better mindful to take time out of each day, to focus on themselves. Many of us took to nature, to unwind our minds, or simply hung out with our families. We all returned the following Monday, well rested, recharged, and ready to hit the ground running and with a better overall sense, that yes, our company cares about us.
We hope to better iterate off already in place initiatives and continue to create exciting and fulfilling resources for our employees to maintain a healthy wellbeing.
If you focus on just merely the output and dollar association of each employee, vs. their overall health, that formula will fail.
What are the Benefits of Wellness Programs?
Community: Showing your employees that you care about their wellbeing builds a sense of community withing your organization. Even in a virtual era, a Wellness Program is a great way to connect employees with one another. The cost associated with launching a program can also be minimal to none. With most of the work being able to be put on by internal tools, you can launch your own Wellness Program without the fear of resource limitations.
Retention: Employees that feel valued by their company, tend to stay longer than those who do not.
Increased Productivity: Studies show that we all perform better when we are in better health. Better alertness, energy, and stamina, which all lead to higher results in levels to productivity.
Reducing Overall Health Issues: Creating resources around helping those we work with build healthier lifestyles can help everyone avoid elevated health risks.
Increased Recruitment: With so many companies these days offering a slew of benefits to candidates, you want to stand out. Make sure to highlight your company’s offerings in order to attract top talent: free gym, covered insurance, ERG’s, rolling more counseling sessions into benefits, etc.
I urge all organizations, to continue to push for Wellness initiatives, continue to have open conversations and listen to those around you. When we are our best selves, is when we can all see greatness and success.
We are all more than our titles – a company is more than its profits – we are a collective whole moving together to create positive change in our fields. Your employee’s wellness is directly tied to achievement.

How Elastic Path Celebrated International Self-Care Day
-
Did you know that July 24th is International Self-Care Day?
This is a day dedicated to focus on the importance of wellness and self-care. The world health organization, defines self-care as “the ability of individuals, families and communities to promote health, prevent disease, maintain health, and cope with illness and disability with or without the support of a health worker.” Self-care is anything that enables you to take care of yourself and manage your own well-being. Self-care is good for your mental health, it can help manage your day-to-day stress, lower your risk of illnesses, and increase your energy.
On Friday, July 23rd, our company recognized International Self-Care Day by providing the day off. Being a global company, often our holidays do not align, so this was a day all employees across geos had the day off. This day was a time to shut down from work, unplug from our emails, disconnect from our Slack channels, and completely unwind. This day was very important for the company to come together and recognize how hard we have worked over the past year and reward ourselves to have a day of rest, and to recharge.
How Employees Spent Their Self-Care Day:
Our team took this day to enjoy hobbies, spend time with family members, disconnect from the digital world and step away fully from their desks.
Shaneil, Senior Product Marketing Specialist, spent the day with family. She mentions, “I was able to surround myself with the people I love the most and taking a break. I got a 2-hour workout in with my mom, took a stroll through Boston public garden with my parents and had dinner together as a family, something I haven’t been able to do in 2 years [due to the pandemic].”
Other employees got to have some quality time with their kids. Whether it was taking the kids to camp, the driving range or other adventures, some employees got that one-on-one time they wanted with their little ones.
Some employees caught up with an old friend that haven’t seen in a long time. Arlene, Lead Technical Writer, spent her day off catching up with an old friend she hasn’t see in a long time. Arlene mentions “I contacted an old friend who lives near where my appointment was. We chat regularly but haven’t seen each other in a very long time. We went for lunch and spent a long time eating and chatting as if no time had ever passed. It was what I needed. It was so nice to meet up with a friend and just hang out. Something I haven’t done in ages.”
Another theme of the day was spending quality time alone. Mel, Senior Delivery Manager, mention “I LOVE Elastic Path for giving me a self-care day. I needed it! I spent my day having a very chilled morning reading a book, drinking lots of coffee, doing a bit of yoga before having a great lunch. I spent my afternoon checking out the thrift & upcycle fashion shops in my local area, so I managed to get quite a few steps to give the body something to think about. It was awesome and it was all about ME.”
Others took the time to disconnect from the online world completely. Emily, Customer Success Manager, was able to spend time to reconnect with herself and nature. Her definition of nature was a nice day at the spa, in Scandinave, Whistler, where the scenery is stunning. Emily highlights how “working for a company that not only says its important for a self-care day, but it does something above and beyond to show it.”
Many employees took time to get outside. Megan, People and Culture Advisor, went on a hike called “Eagle Bluffs” which overlooks Vancouver. Megan highlights, “it was a clear day, so the views were amazing, I usually only get to hike on weekends so getting out on a weekday was really nice, as the trails were quiet.” Megan further mentions how hiking allows her to be “present in the moment,” while also getting out for exercise and explore amazing places. Others enjoyed time outside by going on bike rides, playing disc golf, walking, and more.

Inside Elastic Path with Chandni Prashar
-
Our Inside Elastic Path series features Chandni Prashar, a Functional Specialist based in Vancouver, Canada. Chandni joined Elastic Path three and a half years ago and is very involved in company-wide initiatives like the employee resource group (ERG) for wellness. She truly believes that Mental Health at work is very important and a key element of overall wellness. Learn more about her role, and what she loves about working at our company.
Q: Can you describe a usual workday as a Functional Specialist?
Q: So, tell me about your role, is there anything you are most proud of?
Chandni: I am part of the Professional Services team at Elastic Path; we help our customers grasp how they can potentially utilize our products to solve their day-to-day commerce problems most efficiently. I really enjoy strategically designing and leading our discovery workshops, where we extract the high-level business needs and technical considerations from customer stakeholders.
I am most proud of how our Professional Services team guides each customer through their journey of discovering their real business needs, rather than jumping straight to solutioning and potentially not solve the true business problem.
Q: How would you describe the culture at Elastic Path?
Chandni: The culture at Elastic Path is all about bringing your whole self to work and help each other. When I first interviewed with Elastic Path, everyone I met was very open and remarkable at what they do. And I’m happy to report that the culture at Elastic Path has only improved from when I first joined.
Our current leadership team really put a lot of effort in listening to what the employees have to say. Our CEO, Jamus, recently did a listening tour where we candidly discussed -what’s the current state of the company culture & how can we improve it even further. I’ve also been privileged to be part of the vision statement work that our CEO has undertaken. It includes a very diverse team in every way possible.
Q: Thinking back from when you first joined Elastic Path, what led you to join the company?
Chandni: I found out about the role through a friend who worked at Elastic Path. So, I applied on the company website and sent my friend a quick text, asking if she can refer me. After that it was a very quick process to interviewing and scoring the job!

Q: How important is wellness, and do you believe it is beneficial for employees to practice?
Chandni: I can’t stress this topic enough; wellness and mental health are really important! I am part of an employee resource group which runs the Wellness slack channel at our company. The leadership team takes wellness very seriously. For example, during the month of September, we had a steps challenge where everyone who wanted to participate, would log their steps every Friday. It was amazing to see how many people participated.
October was Mental Health Awareness month and we had a Canadian Olympian, who opened her heart about her life journey and mental health. This talk stirred an honest discussion about mental health at our company. This November, employees in our company are participating in the Movember challenge. This movement was made to prevent mental health and suicide, prostate cancer and testicular cancer, helping men live happier, healthier and longer lives.
Q: Going off the topic of mental health, you have also started weekly meditation zooms for the company; how have those been going?
Chandni: So far, the response has been excellent! The idea is to organize a bi-weekly company-wide meditation practice for the whole month of October, where we practice a ~15 mins guided meditation as a group. People have been responding back with positive feedback, and it is wonderful to hear that they now want longer sessions!
These sessions help us take a moment to fill our cup. The meditation zooms have been a wonderful experience for everyone in the company, and as a result, we have opened a meditation zen club slack channel, for employees to participate in meditation practices.
Q: What do you like to do during your free time?
Chandni: I have two boys, who are six and two years old, so there is not much of free time. We have a screen-free home, so we mostly play outside when weather allows or play board games inside. My partner and I like to cook/bake from scratch, so we spend a lot of time using our creativity in making daily meals. Also, now that our older kid is in the school system, we try to volunteer at school as much as we can.

The Movember Movement
-
Did you know that November is Movember?
Movember is a movement around men’s health. It all started when two friends met at a bar and wanted to bring back the mustache. They got 30 of their friends to grow out mustaches for 30 days in November, which was a fun bonding experience between the group of men.
The mustaches led to many conversations and caused a lot of reactions and conversations around the types of mustaches men were growing. The friends decided to turn it into a movement, called Movember, which evolved into “changing the face of men’s health.”
Movember is a global movement of over 5 million people in 20 countries who’ve raised $1 billion for men’s health initiatives in 2021. As a company, we have raised $2,848 which we are matching to donate a total of $4,848. We decided to support Movember, to help break the stigma, silence and create space for people to talk about their mental health. Movember has supported us through the process, by providing us resource material, and a speaker to engage with employees on the importance of cancer prevention and mental health.
Since 2003, Movember has helped fund 1,300 men’s health programs for prostate, testicular, and mental health including suicide prevention.
The goal is to have men live longer, happier, and healthier lives. Research shows men are less proactive when it comes to accessing their healthcare needs, so the movement seeks to break down some of the barriers.
Testicular cancer is the most common form of cancer in men aged 15-39. “I can’t stress this enough, know the symptoms,” says Shea Theodore, a Canadian professional ice hockey defense man for the Vegas Golden Knights of the National Hockey League. Shea was diagnosed with Stage 1 Testicular Cancer. He emphasizes how important it is for men to know what feels regular and act when they notice a change.
Prostate cancer is more commonly diagnosed in older men, it is the number one diagnoses for those aged 65 years and older. Early detection is key for prostate cancer treatment. Men should go in for a PSA blood test by the age of 50, and talk to their doctor about how to spot symptoms for early detection.
Movember’sofficial slogan for Mental Health is “Have a convo, save a bro.” Mental health and suicide prevention is one of the biggest health issues impacting men today.
Mental Health impacts the day-to-day, and can be adversely affected from a stressful week, or from a bigger issue such as a job loss, or a divorce. It is important to spot the signs, since men tend to ‘mask’ how they feel. It’s crucial for men to know the signs and be able to ask for help.
The Movember movement offers free online mental health tools designed to provide guidance on how to support the men in your life who might be struggling. One of these tools is the ALEC framework, (Ask, Listen, Encourage, Action, Check-In) designed as a launching pad to begin conversations about personal health. For more information visit conversations.movember.com and act.
Movember is more than a mustache; it’s important to recognize men’s health and raise funds to help the men in our lives.

Think you have poor deliverability? 7 reasons not to panic
-
Let’s paint a picture of your day. It’s another day, you get into the office with minimal mishap and you’re planning next month’s campaigns. You check your inbox and freeze. An email has landed telling you that your inbox placement rates are low. 30% of your messages, they say, are going straight into the spam folder and some might not even be being received at all.
Morning ruined, panic ensues.
A common sales tactic of providers in the email space is to note a supposed issue with your current set-up and to let you know that they can solve all your email-related problems. But to solve them, they need to detail to you what’s wrong. This time it’s your deliverability. They’re looking to devalue your current sending status and your successes with your current deliverability team as a way to make you unsure of your current strategy and of course, that’s a pretty handy sales tactic.

What is HIPAA Compliance?
-
Bringing your commerce strategy online and digitizing your business solution is oftentimes a no brainer as it drives more convenience for your customers and creates an overall better customer experience. However, when your business strategy requires your customers to share Protected Health Information (PHI) such as medical records, health insurance records or billing details, your eCommerce strategy becomes more complex. Businesses that operate with this type of information need to ensure that they can remain secure per the federal law known as HIPAA. So what is HIPAA and how does Elastic Path help to support your business’ HIPAA compliance?
What is HIPAA?
HIPAA, formally known as the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996, is a federal law created to protect sensitive patient health information from being disclosed without the patient’s consent or knowledge. The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) issued the HIPAA Privacy rule which establishes important protections of individually identifiable health information also known as Protected Health Information (PHI), when created, received, maintained, or transmitted by a HIPAA covered entity (health care plan, health care provider, healthcare clearinghouse) or business associate (A person or organization using or disclosing individually identifiable health information to perform or provide functions, activities, or services for a covered entity.)
These protections include:
Limitations on uses and disclosure of the information
Safeguards against appropriate uses and disclosures
Individuals rights with respect to their health information
While businesses don’t receive a certification for meeting HIPAA compliance rules, a failure to meet these guidelines could result in significant fines, lack of loyalty, and loss of customers. Therefore it is imperative for your eCommerce business to be fully compliant.
How Do I know If My eCommerce Business Needs To Be HIPAA Compliant?
The simple answer is, if you are handling any type of Protected Health Information (PHI), your business will need to be HIPAA compliant. So this means any type of healthcare businesses along with their business associates (BAs) will require HIPAA compliance in order not meet regulatory guidelines. Examples of these types of businesses include: Dentists, doctors' offices, insurance companies, pharmacies, and optometrists, while examples of their Business Associates include: Billing companies, answering services, and shredding companies. Of course this not an exhaustive list, so we recommend only using this as a baseline and working with a lawyer to determine where your business stands.
How Do I Find a HIPAA Certified eCommerce solution?
While you can work with eCommerce solutions for your HIPAA compliant website, there is currently no certification recognized by the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) for HIPAA compliance for eCommerce solutions, and therefore you will not find a “HIPAA Certified” eCommerce vendor. Complying with HIPAA is a shared responsibility between the Covered entity and the Business Associates. Covered entities are ultimately responsible for evaluating their own HIPAA compliance and working with their vendor to form a Business Associate Agreement (BAA) that specifies each party’s responsibilities when it comes to PHI and ensure the security of their data assets to ensure HIPAA compliance.
Can I Still Work With Elastic Path To Build My HIPAA Compliant Website?
Yes, you can! While you won’t find a HIPAA certified vendor, Elastic Path works with your business and business associates to continue to deliver a unified commerce experience without interrupting your HIPAA compliance.
In summary, achieving HIPAA compliance is a must for any business storing Protected Health Information and you can certainly work with Elastic Path to maintain HIPAA compliance while still delivering your unique eCommerce experiences. If you’re still unsure about how your business can work with Elastic Path to meet your requirements, feel free to set up a call with one of our internal experts to understand how we can help to achieve your goals.
